Custom Orthotics & Computerized Orthotic Scanning in Thousand Oaks
Orthotics are supportive shoe inserts designed to reduce pain in the feet, ankles, knees, and lower back while improving how you stand, walk, and move. While over-the-counter inserts offer general support, prescription custom orthotics are made specifically for your feet. At Performance Foot & Ankle, our podiatrists in Thousand Oaks, CA use computerized orthotic scanning to create precise, comfortable orthotics when store-bought products do not provide relief.

How Computerized Orthotic Scanning Works
Traditional orthotics are made from plaster casts, but our office uses cutting-edge computer technology for a more precise fit. During computerized orthotic scanning, your foot is scanned with a laser that captures detailed anatomical information and sends it to a computer. Your foot is positioned in the alignment it needs to be in to reduce pain, and the scan records that corrected position.
A digital model is then created, and your orthotic is manufactured from that model to hold your foot in the ideal position throughout the day. The result is a highly accurate orthotic that supports your unique foot structure and reduces pain during everyday activities.

Adapting to Life With Custom Orthotics
Orthotics are a highly effective treatment for chronic foot pain. They should be worn daily, especially when you will be on your feet for an extended period. Most patients adjust quickly, but if yours feel unusual at first, start by wearing them a few hours a day and gradually increase the time. If you continue to experience discomfort without improvement, contact your podiatrist for an adjustment.
Custom orthotics typically last about five years, depending on how often you use them and for which activities. An athlete who trains in orthotics will likely wear them out faster than someone who uses them primarily for work or commuting.
Orthotics are often combined with other treatments such as MLS laser therapy and physical therapy for faster relief. Patients with diabetes may also qualify for therapeutic footwear through our diabetic foot care program.

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Orthotics
What is the difference between custom and over-the-counter orthotics?
Over-the-counter orthotics offer general cushioning and support, while custom orthotics are made from a precise scan of your feet to correct your specific alignment and pressure points.
How does computerized orthotic scanning work?
Your foot is scanned with a laser while held in its corrected position. The scan data is sent to a computer to create a digital model, and your orthotic is manufactured from that model.
How long do custom orthotics last?
Custom orthotics typically last about five years, though athletes and very active patients may need replacements sooner.
How long does it take to get used to custom orthotics?
Most patients adjust within one to two weeks. Start by wearing them a few hours a day and gradually increase wear time.
Can I wear custom orthotics in all of my shoes?
Custom orthotics fit best in athletic shoes, walking shoes, and supportive casual shoes. Your podiatrist can recommend styles or additional pairs for dress shoes or specific sports.
Does insurance cover custom orthotics?
Coverage varies by insurance plan. Some plans cover orthotics when medically necessary, and qualifying Medicare patients with diabetes may receive coverage for therapeutic shoes and inserts.
Can orthotics help knee and back pain?
Yes. By improving foot alignment and how your body absorbs impact, custom orthotics may help relieve knee, hip, and lower back pain related to foot mechanics.
