Frequently Asked Questions

What is a podiatrist?

A podiatrist is a doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM) who specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions of the foot, ankle, and lower leg, including performing foot and ankle surgery.

When should I see a podiatrist?

You should see a podiatrist if you have foot or ankle pain lasting more than a few days, an injury, swelling, numbness or tingling, a wound that will not heal, toenail problems, or diabetes.

Is Performance Foot & Ankle accepting new patients?

Yes. We are accepting new patients and offer same-day appointments whenever possible. Call (805) 273-1415 to schedule your visit.

Do I need a referral to see a podiatrist?

PPO plans and Medicare generally do not require a referral to see a podiatrist, but we recommend confirming with your insurance carrier.

What insurance do you accept?

We accept many PPO plans and Medicare, including Aetna, Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Cigna, HealthNet, Multiplan, Screen Actors Guild, Tricare, United Healthcare, and United TriCare. We do not accept HMO plans.

What are your office hours?

Our office is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM and is closed Saturday and Sunday.

Where is your office located?

Our office is located at 3095 Old Conejo Road, Suite 100, Thousand Oaks, CA 91320.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring your insurance card, photo ID, a list of current medications, completed new patient forms, and any recent imaging or records related to your foot or ankle concern.

Do you offer x-rays in the office?

Yes. We offer in-office digital x-ray and diagnostic ultrasound, so many patients receive a diagnosis during their first visit.

What is the most common cause of heel pain?

Plantar fasciitis, inflammation of the ligament along the bottom of the foot, is the most common cause of heel pain. It usually responds well to conservative treatment.

Can bunions be treated without surgery?

Conservative treatments such as wider shoes, padding, and custom orthotics can relieve bunion pain and slow progression. Surgery is the only way to correct the deformity itself.

How can I tell if my ankle is sprained or broken?

Sprains and fractures can cause similar pain, swelling, and bruising. An x-ray is the most reliable way to tell the difference.

Should I remove an ingrown toenail myself?

No. Cutting at an ingrown toenail can cause infection and make the problem worse. A podiatrist can safely remove it with local anesthetic.

Why is foot care important for people with diabetes?

Diabetes can reduce circulation and sensation in the feet, allowing small injuries to become ulcers and infections. Regular podiatry exams help prevent serious complications.

Does Medicare cover diabetic shoes?

Qualifying Medicare patients with diabetes may receive coverage for therapeutic shoes and inserts through the Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Program, which we participate in.

What is MLS laser therapy?

MLS laser therapy is a painless, drug-free treatment that uses laser energy to reduce pain and inflammation and accelerate healing in conditions like plantar fasciitis, tendinitis, and neuropathy.

Are custom orthotics worth it?

Custom orthotics are made from a precise scan of your feet and are often effective when over-the-counter inserts fail to relieve pain. They typically last about five years.

How do you treat plantar warts?

We offer several wart treatments, including Swift microwave therapy, topical medications, cryotherapy, cantharidin, and minor surgery for stubborn warts.

Do you perform foot and ankle surgery?

Yes. Our board-certified surgeons perform foot and ankle surgery, including minimally invasive procedures, when conservative treatments have not provided relief.

Do you participate in clinical trials?

Yes. Led by Dr. Patel, our practice is currently enrolling patients in a clinical trial for nonhealing diabetic foot ulcers.
